TAKING FLIGHT: New Turf Installed at Eagle Stadium

TAKING FLIGHT: New Turf Installed at Eagle Stadium
Dean MacInnis

What started as a necessary replacement for the stadium turf has transformed into a symbol of progress, pride, and possibility for Eagle Point High School and the wider community.

This summer, EPHS’s worn-out 13-year-old turf field, which was originally installed in 2012, was finally replaced with a brand-new, state-of-the-art surface. However, this new turf signifies more than just an upgrade; it represents an investment in our student-athletes. This commitment is a significant step toward building a stronger, more inclusive athletic program and campus culture.

“It was time,” said Athletic & Activities Director/Assistant Principal Dave Ehrhardt, who joined the district in 2024. “The turf had exceeded its expected 10-year lifespan. The district had done an incredible job maintaining it, but it was like a worn-out carpet in your home—still functional, but clearly in need of replacement.”

Rather than spending tens of thousands of dollars on ongoing repairs, the district made a proactive decision to fully upgrade the field. This approach not only prevented rising costs in the future but also ensured the safety and performance of student-athletes.

“We asked ourselves: why invest more in something that was already on borrowed time?” Mr. Ehrhardt explained. “With support from Superintendent Kovach and the EPSD9 School Board, we knew this was the right decision—not just financially, but for the health and well-being of the program.”

The new turf is already a victory—not just for  EPHS, but for the entire community. The field will be used year-round for various activities, including football, soccer, physical education classes, youth sports leagues, church events, and local club teams. As Dave noted, “This is a true community facility.”

This community-focused spirit also extends to the turf itself. Much of the old turf was re-purposed rather than discarded. Portions were donated to the youth soccer program for practice areas, the baseball field for improved training space, and even to other organizations.

“We never imagined there would be so much interest in the old turf,” Dave said. “It has helped expand our practice areas, reduce wear on grass fields, and save us close to $20,000 in disposal costs.”

The new surface, installed by FieldTurf, a global leader in synthetic fields, includes over 560,000 pounds of infill—a combination of silica sand and rubber that creates a cushioned, grass-like feel for athletes. It is a significant upgrade in both quality and longevity.

“FieldTurf has completed projects all over the world, including some I worked on at Phoenix High,” said Ehrhardt. “Their surfaces hold up incredibly well.”

The installation was a massive endeavor, involving heavy equipment and expert crews, and took up entire parking lots. However, within just a few weeks, the transformation was complete.

Eagle Point’s boys’ soccer team will be the first to use the new turf in an evening scrimmage event. Just two days later, the football team will kick off its season with a “Midnight Madness” practice, symbolizing a fresh start under the lights on a field designed to inspire.

While the new field is impressive, its deeper value lies in what it offers students: safety, pride, and opportunity.

“The seniors now were kindergarteners when the original turf was installed,” Dave said. “They are now witnessing what it means to have a community invest in them. It shows our athletes, coaches, and everyone involved that we are serious about growing our programs.”

This commitment doesn’t end with the field. The district has also invested in repainting the gym, refinishing floors, upgrading locker rooms, and preparing to repair and re-stripe the aging track—all part of a comprehensive effort to enhance the student experience.

As Dave put it, “This new turf serves as a launching pad. It sets the stage for everything else we’re working toward. When we improve our facilities, we provide students with better tools to succeed and give coaches a stronger foundation to build on.”

“The new turf is not only exciting for the athletic programs but also for the entire community. This project demonstrates the support and progress that the district is experiencing.” Says EPHS Football Coach, Erik Johnson.

EPHS Girls Soccer Coach, Omar Mendez, feels “The new turf is a game-changer for our school and for the soccer program. It reflects the growth and improvement of our athletics. This brand-new surface offers significant advantages, including a fast-cleaning design and enhanced safety features that minimize the risk of injuries. We are thrilled about this upgrade and excited for a great season ahead. Our program has been steadily improving in recent years, and this year, we are poised to take it to the next level.”

After a couple of practices, EPHS football player Mason noticed, “It kind of feels like a restart for us — the new turf just makes everything smoother. I’m moving quicker, slipping less, and the whole team feels more locked in.”

“The new field brought a whole new energy. It’s softer, safer, and you can feel the pride — like getting a new car and wanting to show it off. We’re protecting our new home now.” Says EPHS Student, Gavin.

Ultimately, this initiative goes far beyond Eagle Point High School. From re-purposing old materials to welcoming local groups to the field, the new turf embodies a philosophy that athletics should benefit everyone in the EPSD9 Community.

“This is more than just sports,” emphasized Dave. “It’s about creating a place where students feel supported, where coaches can grow their programs, and where the community sees itself reflected in our efforts.”

The new field is a reflection of the continued efforts to invest in our students and the opportunities we can make possible for them. GO EAGLES!
