EAGLE POINT, Ore. - Southern Oregon Sparrow Clubs is making a significant impact by pairing its 2025-2026 Sparrows with schools throughout the Rogue Valley. For Eagle Point High School, this partnership is particularly personal.

David, a dedicated high school junior known for his athleticism and kindness, suffered a severe medical emergency on September 24 during soccer practice. He experienced a sudden headache and vomiting, leading to an urgent rush to the hospital.

"I didn't even know what aneurysms were up until this point," David's father, Camerino, said. "We found out that he was born with it... and they became weaker and weaker up in the brain."

Following several surgeries, David is now on the path to recovery with the support of Southern Oregon Sparrow Clubs. This organization is committed to lessening the financial and emotional strain on families facing medical challenges.

"We're all about kids helping kids in medical need," Kena Sampson, the director of Southern Oregon Sparrow Clubs, said. "We will then place them with a school endearingly, adopt them to that school... and we're going to challenge them to go out into their community and do community service."

Eagle Point High School has embraced David as their Sparrow — with students and staff already knowing him well and rallying around him.

"It definitely seems like this hit close to home to everybody because he's one of our own," Vianna Garcia-Moreno, the school president, said. "We know him, we can really help him."

David's cousin, Richard Alferez, shared how family and teammates frequently visit, engaging him in activities like playing Uno to bolster his spirits.

"He does the little grip strength things and we play a lot of Uno with all my cousins and everything," Alferez said.

The school's athletic director and assistant principal, Dave Ehrhardt, expressed the impact of David's absence on the team.

"I know all fall, it really weighed heavily on the mind of our soccer boys knowing that he was one of their own and was going through what he was," Ehrhardt said.

As David continues to recover, Eagle Point High School remains steadfast in their support, demonstrating the power of community in times of need.
