Building Bridges Between School and Home: A Spotlight on Mr. Eric Thomas & Jasper
At Eagle Point School District 9, one person is continuously focused on building stronger connections between students, families, and educators—Mr. Eric Thomas, the district’s Behavior Intervention Specialist. With a passion for collaboration and a heart for helping kids thrive, Eric describes himself as an “information and skills facilitator.” Eric’s overall goal is to support students’ behavioral growth through strategies that empower the adults and children in their lives.
Eric works with teachers, staff, and parents to develop consistent, evidence-based approaches for guiding student behavior. Using tools like, Love and Logic, Collaborative Problem Solving, and Crisis Prevention Intervention, he tailors support plans that meet the unique needs of each student. “It’s all about coaching through consistency,” he says, emphasizing the importance of building habits, emotional regulation, and resilience.
A key part of Eric’s work involves reaching beyond the classroom and into the community. His Love and Logic parenting classes have already made a big impact. Parents regularly report transformative results—improved communication, stronger relationships with their children, and new tools for navigating challenges at home. “It’s so rewarding to see those ‘aha’ moments,” Eric shares. “Sometimes it’s the smallest changes that make the biggest difference.”
With the 2025-26 school year, Eric will be implementing an exciting new initiative at the Eagle Point Public Library. Starting in October, families can look forward to a book study series focused on parenting, behavior, and child development. Each session will combine research-based insights with open discussion, offering practical strategies parents can use immediately. The goal is to create a supportive, ongoing resource that brings parents together to learn and grow.
Eric’s vision extends beyond individual families. His mission is to rebuild a sense of community—a partnership where schools, families, and students all work together toward success. “We’re always on stage for our kids,” he explains. “They learn how to handle emotions by watching us. So, if we can be intentional in what we model, we’re shaping strong, resilient young people.”
And let’s not forget Jasper, Eric’s four-legged sidekick in support. Jasper, a calm and friendly emotional support dog, helps break down barriers with students and adults alike. Whether it’s calming nerves or opening the door to tough conversations, Jasper plays an essential role in helping Eric build meaningful connections.
As the 2025–26 school year approaches, families can expect more opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. “We want to be a resource,” Eric says. “Not just in the schools, but in the community. The more we work together, the stronger our kids become.”
