Eagle Point School District #9 Board selects Andrew Kovach as next District Superintendent

Eagle Point School District #9 Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Andrew Kovach has been selected as the district's Superintendent effective on March 12,2020. Current Superintendent Cynda Rickert will be retiring on March 11, 2020 after many years of successful service at Eagle Point School District #9.

"The Eagle Point SD #9 Board was pleased to be able to choose from an excellent field of candidates for the superintendent position. After interviews with numerous candidates, reference checking and having the three finalists spend a day in our district meeting staff and community, Andy Kovach emerged as the right choice to be our next Superintendent," Board Chair Dan Hodges said. "He has a proven record of success as Principal at Eagle Point High School and he felt like the right fit to take our district into the future."

Andy Kovach has been the Principal at Eagle Point High School since 2017. During this time the Eagle Point High School graduation rate has improved from 79% to 89% and freshman-on-track has moved from 77% to 89%. At the same time EPHS has expanded programs including new CTE offerings in Informational Technology and Veterinary Science. Prior to being the Eagle Point High School Principal, Andy served as Superintendent of Pendleton School District and Principal of Ontario High School.

While at Ontario High School, Andy was a leader during a school transformation project in which student reading scores improved 30% and math scores 23%. Other positions Kovach held at Ontario SD included, associate high school principal, elementary school principal and Director of Migrant Education. Before Ontario School District, Andy was Director of Student Services and an associate middle school principal at Nyssa SD and spent time in the classroom teaching social studies. His other education experiences include teaching at Crane SD where he was also Special Services Coordinator for special education and federal programs. He has a Master's Degree in Teaching from Willamette University and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Oregon State University.

"I am excited and honored to take up this position." said Andy Kovach. "I am looking forward to working with all the district's schools and each of the communities that make up the district. I am appreciative of Superintendent Rickert for bringing me to Eagle Point High School. This is a fabulous place to live and work and I am looking forward to building on the progress Superintendent Rickert has achieved. Over the coming weeks and months, I will be working to get a better understanding of the needs and strengths of each of the district's schools. I intend to especially focus on improving math performance and developing communication with staff and patrons. I invite anyone who has thoughts or ideas concerning Eagle Point SD9 schools to contact me."
